The fall in the price of goods and services will impact economic growth, affirm economists of the National University of Costa Rica [in Spanish: UNA].

According to what economists from the National University affirm, the fall in the price of goods and services will have an impact on economic growth. As they point out, domestic production will grow 5% during 2023, which is currently at 3.8%.

Exports grow 6% in the first quarter driven by the food industry

Exports grew 6% in the first quarter of 2024, led by the food industry, which grew 13%, followed by the agro-industry with 11%, and still further, precision and medical equipment with 8%. Moreover, fishing increased by 2%, making Europe the second most important market for the country in terms of greater growth. An increase in exports represented 12%.

The Central Bank reduces its policy rate bolstered by low inflation

Bolstered by expectations of low inflation for the second quarter of the year, the Central Bank has taken the decision to cut the policy rate by 50 basis points, which is now at 4.75%. The president of the Central Bank confirmed that it was used for benchmarking as inflation turns negative, although for the second semester of the year it is expected to close on a positive note.
